Sonarpur, West Bengal · Building AI for public good — in healthcare, with a human-centered lens.
UHHS is a new university taking shape in Sonarpur, on Kolkata's southern edge, built to join health sciences with humanities, social science, climate science, and AI — rather than treat them separately.
Nagarik Samaj USA is helping fund one part of it: the School of Computing, AI & Data Science. The school is designed to keep technology in service of people — developing AI for resource-constrained healthcare settings, with an emphasis on human-centered, ethical design, alongside partnerships with global tech firms and Indian health-tech companies.
What NS dollars fund specifically: [Faculty positions / lab equipment / scholarships — to be confirmed before launch.]
For diaspora donors in tech, this is a rare opportunity to fund AI education that keeps technology anchored to the communities it's meant to serve.
The curriculum emphasizes ethical, human-centered design — developing AI tools that work in resource-constrained healthcare environments, not just in high-income contexts.
Health sciences, social science, climate science, and AI in one institution — built to produce graduates who understand the human stakes of the systems they build.
Partnerships with global tech firms and Indian health-tech companies provide students with real-world exposure and employers with a pipeline of purpose-driven talent.
A world-class AI school, built in Kolkata's backyard, for students from the region — not another institution that trains talent for export elsewhere.
UHHS builds on fifteen years of work by Liver Foundation, West Bengal — and a track record that speaks for itself.
Liver Foundation's existing institutions — the Indian Institute of Liver Disease and Digestive Sciences, the John C. Martin Centre for Liver Research and Innovations, and the Chandrakant Institute of Nursing and Health Sciences — demonstrate a track record of turning donations into lasting institutions. UHHS holds FCRA registration, allowing it to receive foreign contributions.
Note: UHHS recognition/accreditation status is [to be confirmed before launch]. The university is described as forthcoming/new. Nagarik Samaj USA's gift supports work that is underway at the institutional level, while the AI/DS school is in early-stage development.
We publish this for every funded project. Not to market the project — but because transparency is the basis of trust.
Built on operating institutions with 15+ years of history. The foundation is real — not a plan. The AI/DS school specifically is in [early-stage / development — confirm]. Nagarik Samaj USA treats this as an early-stage commitment within our criteria's scope.
A 15-year track record, prior international funding ($7.5M from the John C. Martin Foundation), and multiple established institutions. The leadership's history of turning donations into lasting infrastructure is the strongest signal here.
[To be confirmed: exactly what NS dollars fund — faculty, lab equipment, scholarships? This will be specified before launch and updated on this page.]
[To be confirmed: what does NS capital specifically unlock — what wouldn't happen, or wouldn't happen as soon, without it?]
Education and technology in West Bengal — squarely on mission. For diaspora donors in tech, this is a rare opportunity to fund AI education aimed at public good back home.
